This page explains how we source images and research, and how we handle affiliate and sponsored content, so readers know what they are looking at.
Sourcing and archival photography
Wherever possible, article images are real objects drawn from open-access museum collections (such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Open Access programme), credited to the originating institution near the image. Archival material presented as “From the Archive” is described as accurately as our records allow, but dates, attributions and provenance for older material are sometimes approximate and are corrected when better information comes to light.
We do not present staged, AI-generated or stock photography as an authentic historical object or archival document. If a piece uses illustrative or supporting imagery of a different kind, that is noted in the article.
Affiliate and sponsored content
The Patina Journal does not currently run affiliate links or sponsored content. This section is published in advance so that, if either is introduced, the policy is already in place:
- Any affiliate link will be disclosed in the article, typically the first time it appears, and we may earn a small commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
- Any sponsored or paid-for article will be clearly labelled as such near the headline, before you start reading.
- Editorial recommendations are never for sale. A brand paying for placement does not buy a favourable opinion.
Editorial independence
Historical, restoration and buying guidance reflects our own research and editorial judgement, offered for general interest and education rather than as professional appraisal or conservation advice — see our Terms of Service for the full disclaimer on that point.
Questions about a specific image, source or piece of archival material are welcome — get in touch.
